We want you to tell the world why you are progressive. Why is this important? It is important because though the majority in our country believe in progressive values and support progressive policies, Americans are 20% more likely to call themselves conservative than progressive. We need to close this gap.
By far, most Americans believe in the common good, decency, and dignity for all. We believe that our shared responsibilities are as important as our personal responsibilities. We believe that it is better to find common ground and bring people together than it is to drive wedges between them. And we believe that these values need champions, not just in the halls of government and in the media, but in our neighborhoods and communities.
Why “progressive” and not “liberal?” Unlike liberalism, which is a long-standing ideology, progressivism is an orientation towards politics based on the concept that the world is dynamic. Progressivism looks beyond the false and divisive dichotomy central to the conservative vs. liberal debate to offer a broader world view that recognizes progressive innovations are not the unique domain of one political party.
The progressive legacy is at the core of what we hold dearest in this world. Fairness in the workplace, freedom of expression and religion, escape from oppression, and universal suffrage—these are all progressive values that we won through the efforts of great progressive heroes like Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, and Abraham Lincoln.
